PIAAAA Playoff

Posted Friday, November 12, 2010 by Rick O'Brien, Philly.com
We've dabbled in playoff-level action the last two weekends, but postseason play begins in earnest in Week 11. Thirteen games are on the slate Friday, including eight in the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA tournament and four in the District 1 AAA bracket.

With so many potentially drama-filled contests on tap, let's get right to our predictions.

District 1 Class AAAA
No. 16 West Chester Henderson (7-3) at No. 1 Ridley (10-0), 7 p.m. Friday. The Warriors need to keep a close eye on quarterback Sean Blundin (133.4 rating, 7 touchdown passes) and speedy tailback Shahaid Smith (137 carries for 1,300 yards and 9 TDs). Pick: Ridley, 28-7.

No. 9 Boyertown (9-1) vs. No. 8 West Chester Rustin (9-1), at West Chester Henderson, 7 p.m. Friday. Can the Bears slow down QB Andrew Fithian (1,360 passing yards, 22 TDs, 0 interceptions) and sure-handed wideout Anthony Nash (41 catches for 1,040 yards and 25 TDs)? Pick: Rustin, 26-24.

No. 13 Upper Dublin (8-2) at No. 4 Neshaminy (9-1), 7 p.m. Friday. The Cardinals, fueled by QB Andrew Derr (1,216 yards passing, 11 TDs, 3 INTs) and tailback Anthony Williams (11 TDs in seven games), will be hard-pressed to win at Heartbreak Ridge. Pick: Neshaminy, 31-13.

No. 12 Cheltenham (9-1) at No. 5 Abington (8-2), 7 p.m. Friday. End Richard Levine, tackle Logan Niederriter, and linebacker Orvin Liburd (20-plus tackles for losses) will be among the Panthers trying to corral quick-footed QB Julien Ireland. Pick: Cheltenham, 21-20.

No. 15 Souderton (7-3) at No. 2 Council Rock South (9-1), 7 p.m. Friday. C.R. South's defense, which yielded only 42 points through eight games, struggled down the stretch. Halfbacks Tyler Scholl and Javon White find the cracks in that now-vulnerable unit. Pick: Souderton, 28-27.

No. 10 Central Bucks West (8-2) at No. 7 Coatesville (8-2), 7 p.m. Friday. Brian Hensel's Bucks, 1-10 last season, have made quite a turnaround. The Red Raiders have won six straight since a Week 4 loss to Downingtown East. Pick: Coatesville, 30-21.

No. 14 Penn Wood (9-1) at No. 3 North Penn (9-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Del-Val League champions, powered by Penn State-bound Shawn Oakman and slotback Kali Smith, face a daunting challenge at Crawford Stadium. Pick: North Penn, 34-6.

No. 11 Owen J. Roberts (8-2) at No. 6 Downingtown East (8-2), 7 p.m. Friday. For defensive tackle Jeff Kiely and the Cougars, it's all about making OJR's Ryan Brumfield, an 8,291-yard career rusher, earn every yard at Kottmeyer Stadium. Pick: East, 41-23.

District 1 Class AAA

No. 8 Upper Perkiomen (5-5) at No. 1 Strath Haven (9-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Indians are spurred by QB Casey Perlstein (1,487 yards passing, 16 TDs), fullback John Olson (926 rushing yards, 10 TDs), and wideout Ronnie Gillespie (41 catches for 971 yards, 12 TDs). Pick: Strath Haven, 35-14.

No. 5 Springfield-Delco (7-3) at No. 4 Bishop Shanahan (7-3), 11 a.m. Saturday. This season, Springfield's Matt Craig has rushed 188 times for 1,584 yards and 26 TDs. His career numbers: 3,613 yards and 48 TDs. Pick: Springfield, 26-20.

No. 7 Interboro (5-5) at No. 2 Upper Moreland (8-2), 7 p.m. Friday. It's rematch time. The Golden Bears, led by tailback Greg Adamson, knocked off two-way tackle Zack McMenamin and the Bucs, 28-20, in Glenolden in Week 4. Pick: Upper Moreland, 23-16.

No. 6 Academy Park (6-4) at No. 3 Pottsgrove (8-2), 7 p.m. Friday. The Knights' offense is headed by running back Demetre Carter (106 carries for 815 yards, 8 TDs) and QB Carl Coleman (665 yards passing, 337 rushing). Pick: Pottsgrove, 33-19.

District 1 Class A

No. 2 Calvary Christian (7-3) vs. No. 1 Morrisville (7-3), at Harry S Truman, 7 p.m. Friday. Speedy tailback Ian Richardson and the Mike Reichenbach-coached Cougars crushed the Bulldogs, 53-14, in Week 8. Pick: Calvary, 46-13.
