Week 10

Posted Friday, November 05, 2010 by Peter DiGiovanni, Daily Local

Week 10 is here and with it brings the last full weekend of the regular season. The playoffs will be in some teams' futures, but for many it is the end of the line. As of now, the area has five teams that would qualify for the District 1 dance, but West Chester Henderson needs a win at Downingtown East to gain entrance to the tournament.

For the Cougars, they will be looking for an outright Ches-Mont National title and a top four seed come district time. Downingtown East has a potent offense that is averaging 34 points per game and Henderson head coach Joe Walsh talked about his team and the Cougars and how hard it is to stop the Cougars.

"They have the big three with (Drew) Harris, the quarterback (Trey Lauletta) and the tight end (Tyler Kroft)," Walsh said. "They are very hard to stop. Our defense has played well this year and better at some times than others. We are going to need a big effort against East.

"As far as our offense we put Jake Richard at running back because he can play that position and we put Strafford Foster at quarterback. We now have speed back there with Jake to go along with Ryan Brewer and we have Zach Jones back healthy.

"Getting Jones back for Avon Grove was big for us. He allows us to do so many more things with his speed. He made a great play defensively last week on (Brandon) Monk, catching him from behind. With Harris this week, he is not like Monk. Monk you can't catch, Harris you can catch, but he bounces off you and still picks up yards."

Pick: Downingtown East 27, West Chester Henderson 21.

Avon Grove at Coatesville

Another big game for the Red Raiders, who have allowed only 10 points in their last two games. Avon Grove has been giving up a ton of points.

Pick: Coatesville 35, Avon Grove 14.

Conestoga at Haverford

The Pioneers' Dexter Bridge leads the area with 48 catches, while running back Blair Brooks has 1,352 yards rushing. 'Stoga goes out on a winning note here.

Pick: Conestoga 34, Haverford 24.

Germantown Academy at Malvern Prep

The Friars offense has struggled since the Downingtown East game and last week it cost them against Haverford School.

Pick: Malvern Prep 17, Germantown Academy 13.

Sun Valley at Great Valley

This is a chance for the young Patriots to let out a lot of frustration and beat down a team.

Pick: Great Valley 28, Sun Valley 7.

Octorara vs. W.C. Rustin at W.C. Henderson

The Golden Knights are rolling as quarterback Andrew Fithian has completed 55 of 88 passes for 20 touchdowns and future Division 1 receiver Anthony Nash has hauled in 10 of those scores, 12 total.

Pick: West Chester Rustin 40, Octorara 14.

Oxford at West Chester East

Oxford may be the most improved team in the area but if East has any hopes of building something for next year they need a win here.

Pick: West Chester East 21, Oxford 17.

Saturday's games

Downingtown West at Bishop Shanahan

It comes down to this: If Shanahan wins and Springfield (Delco) loses to Strath Haven, then the Eagles host a Class AAA playoff game. The Whippets are playing for pride.

Pick: Bishop Shanahan 28, Downingtown West 21.

Unionville at Kennett

Big win for Kennett last week against Oxford and it looks like the Blue Demons have a bright future. But this game should go to the Indians.

Pick: Unionville 28, Kennett 14.
