Red Raiders triumph

WEST CHESTER — When the weather turns cold and windy as the calendar swings closer to playoff football, the teams that can play tough, shut-down defense are the teams that will be successful.

Friday night at J. Oscar Dicks Stadium West Chester Henderson and Coatesville battled in a physical war that was not for the faint of heart.

Henderson did not take care of its early chances and did not get many more as the Red Raiders edged closer to a Class AAAA playoff berth with a very impressive 10-0 shutout of the Warriors.

"We play tough and fast and physical," Coatesville's Kevin Berry said. "We read all our checks and we practice tackling and doing all the fundamentals. We are a very tough defense and tonight we showed it."

Henderson (2-2 Ches-Mont, 5-3 overall) took the opening kickoff and drove the ball to the Red Raider 25-yard line after chewing up more than seven minutes of the first peri

od. But Coatesville (3-1, 6-2) stiffened and Warriors quarterback Jake Richard's fourth down pass into the end zone fell incomplete.

Coatesville then gave Henderson a gift as they fumbled the foootball on their third offensive play. But again Coatesville resembled a brick wall and Henderson's fourth-down pass fell incomplete and Henderson never got as good a chance again.

"We shot ourselves in the foot early," Henderson head coach Joe Walsh said. "You have to get points down there and we were not able to take advantage in the first period. I thought our defense played very well against a good team like they are but we made too many mistakes offensively. But our kids battled very hard."

Coatesville's defense had a big hand in its first score when late in the second period, Shawn Brannon hit Myles Jackson like a freight train and the ball came loose. In swooped Marquis Weathington, who picked up the ball and ran it back to the Coatesville 42-yard line with just 2:07 left in the first half.

"Shawn knocked the ball loose and I just said I have to go get it for my team," Weathington said. "I wanted to get the ball for my offense and watch them get points. I feel we can play with anyboidy with the team we have. We played tough Coatesville defense tonight."

It took Coatesville seven plays to get into the end zone. Two passes from Manny Stocker to Kyle Kerrick fueled the drive. The second was a 12-yard pass to Kerrick in the flat that Kerrick did most of the work to get into the end zone and give Coatesville a 7-0 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same as Coatesville's defense held Henderson to just 112 yards rushing onthe night and forced Richard into a 8-for-24 passing nightmare. But special teams gave Coatesville its next chance.

Kevin Berry took a Richard punt at his own 44-yard line and danced his way to the Henderson 16-yard line. After the Henderson defense held on downs, Colby Perry lofted a 31-yard field goal to give Coatesville a 10-0 lead.

"I was just looking to give our offense a chance to make some plays," Berry said. "I made some mistakes early in the game and I wanted to make up for that."

Henderson, down 10 points, could not muster any offense in the fourth period as the Red Raiders continued to swarm to the ball and they came away with a big road victory.

"We played fantastic defense and special teams tonight," Coatesville head coach Matt Ortega said. "We have kids believing in what we are doing and tonight against a good team they did the job. Our defense and special teams did it and our offense is coming on. Hats off to Henderson's defense. They played great.

"Now we have to get ready for Downingtown West. That is a big rivalry game and they are tough."
