Red Raiders burn Eagles

Posted Sunday, October 10, 2010 by Nate Heckenberger, Daily Local

CALN -- Coatesville is starting to get its swagger back.

After clearing a major hurdle last week against Unionville, the Red Raiders finally put a full offensive effort together to run away from some tough competition.

Coatesville looked physical, crisp, and most importantly, looked like a good football team at home Friday against Bishop Shanahan, as the Red Raiders sped to a 42-22 win in the Ches-Mont League National Division contest.

Dae-hon Cheung rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns to lead Coatesville (1-1 league, 4-2 overall), which amassed, by far, its season-high in offensive yardage with 426 total, and held Shanahan (1-2, 4-2) to a season low, 245.

"We weren't in this position last year, so it feels good," Coatesville coach Matt Ortega said. "To be mid-season and get into a good rhythm, it's exciting to put two wins together this late in the season. It's a sign we're coming together as a team and hopefully we keep rolling."

There was a 21-second span that broke the game open for the Red Raiders late in the second quarter. After the Eagles answered Cheung's first score with a 10-yard run by Mike Ibarguen from the muddle huddle formation on fourth down to tie it, 7-7, Coatesville marched right back down to regain the lead on a five-yard dash by Cheung.

On the ensuing kick return, Shanahan fumbled and Marcus Smith recovered, giving the Red Raiders the ball on the Eagles' 40. The next play Manny Stocker perfectly lofted a pass to Kyle Kerrick, who got behind the defense, for a touchdown to make it 21-7 three minutes be

fore halftime.

"Those two plays right there were the biggest of the game," Shanahan coach Paul Meyers said. "Give (Coatesville) credit. It was a good call to go up top there."

The Red Raiders defense clamped even tighter with the lead. On the Eagles' first scoring drive Ryan Egolf and Ibarguen hit on a 40-yard screen play to set up the score, making Egolf 4-for-4 to start the game. From there, however, Coatesville limited him to 2-of-10 for nine yards and interception before tacking on four completions and a touchdown on the final drive.

"We knew coming in (Shanahan) hadn't seen many multiple coverages or schemes," Ortega said. "The whole defensive staff did a great job putting in three or four coverages and I think that was something they hadn't seen all year."

The Eagles hadn't seen an effort from Cheung like they saw Friday, either. With Dom Wilson missing his second straight game due to an injury, Cheung has delivered with 43 carries and 276 yards in the past two games to give him 483 on the year.

"I came out and tried my best to run the ball as hard as I could," said the home-run-hitter-turned-workhorse, Cheung.

Stocker completed nine of 12 passes for 138 yards and snuck one in, himself, while Kerrick continued to display his smooth athleticism, catching three passes for 52 yards and reaching paydirt on a 35-yard reverse.

"The big plays killed us," Meyers said. "If we cut down on a couple big plays we have a ball game. They're just so athletic."

Coatesville's previous high for total yards was 269 against McKinley Tech, but it seems the offense is finally catching up to the play of its defense. The fact that the Red Raiders put up those kind of numbers with 13 penalties may be even more impressive. They will face West Chester East next week before traveling to West Chester Henderson the following Friday.

Shanahan has now lost two in a row after winning its first four games. Things only get tougher for the Eagles with Downingtown East on the schedule for next week.
