Coatesville grinds out tough win over Unionville

EAST MARLBOROUGH — The Coatesville High football team scored early against Unionville on Saturday afternoon, then was able to hold on for a 21-17 win over the Indians.

When the Red Raiders' offense sputtered in the second half, the defense stepped up.

"We've been through some tough games this year where we fell short," Coatesville coach Matt Ortega said. "We knew we had to grind out that real good win. Coming to Unionville, they're a rock-solid program and we knew going into the season that we could play real good football and still be going into this game 2-2. We circled this game back in March. We knew that this was gonna be a pivotal game for us. I think our kids bought into that and they came out here hungry. We've learned from our games where we fell short earlier in the year and now we were able to grind one of these tough wins out."

Red Raiders quarterback Manny Stocker completed 9 of 13 passes for 110 yards and hooked up with Kyle Kerrick on an 11-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Stocker also opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run to cap a scoring drive on the game's opening series.

Coatesville (3-2) took a 14-0 lead after Dae-hon Cheung (96 yards) capped an eight-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Unionville (2-3) got on the board in the second quarter when Mason Popham reached the end zone from four yards out, but Coatesville answered with a four-minute drive that saw Stocker connect with Kerrick with just 41.3 seconds left in the half.

Refusing to cede the half, Unionville quarterback Connor Gades (146 yards) connected on three straight passes of 19 yards, five yards and 17 yards to get the Indians to Coatesville's 23-yard line, setting up Norb Sax's 40-yard field

goal as time ran out.

"We got off to a slow start and that's credit to Coatesville and certainly some of it's our fault, too," Unionville coach Pat Clark said. "We didn't look prepared at the beginning and I'll have to address that. I have to make sure that we're ready to go early in games."

The Indians appeared to grab the momentum when Gades connected with Rich Kaiser on a 58-yard scoring pass on the first series of the second half, but from there the Coatesville defense took over and shut Unionville down the rest of the way — but not without a few scares.

"We had trouble running the ball inside in the second half," Clark said. "While we certainly had enough opportunities in the second half we just didn't capitalize."

With time running out and Unionville facing a 4th-and-9, Coatesville's Shawn Brannon tipped away Gades' pass, effectively ending the game.

"We had so many chances to get them off the field and they kept going right at us," Brannon said. "I said we've got to go one more down and it was fourth down and a tipped pass and it was over."

It wasn't Brannon's only big play of the game.

Unionville started its second possession of the third quarter with a 13-yard run by Gades. But on the next snap, Brannon got to Gades for the first sack of the day. After a carry by Popham lost a yard, Coatesville's Devyn Gallimore got to Gades again, this time for an eight-yard loss.

"That's why we gave him the game ball," Ortega said of Brannon. "He unfortunately lost his mother this week and we rallied behind him. He had a rough week, but he came out here and played with all his heart. We did it for him and his mom."

"I had a good team and staff and they helped me throughout the week," Brannon said. "They kept me strong. They told me to go through this and I went through it and they dedicated this game to my mom. We went out there and played hard even though we had our backs against the wall."
