2nd half whitewash propels Cougars in league opener 21-14

by Paul Sarpen

Like week 3 was the opening week in the Central League here in District 1, week 4 brought the opening week of league games in the Ches-Mont League- which was highlighted by the one of the defending Ches-Mont tri champions in Downingtown East travelling to Coatesville Area Multi-Purpose Stadium to take on the upstart Red Raiders of Coatesville.  An interesting note to this rivalry- since Downingtown High split into two schools, the home team has only won this game one time- last season, when Downingtown East beat Coatesville at Kottmeyer Stadium.  It held true to form this week- the Cougars were the road team and downed the Red Raiders 21-14.

For the third week in a row, the same story held true for the Cougars of Downingtown East.  A struggle in the first half, then the defense would put clamps down in the second half.  The Cougars went in to halftime the last few weeks with leads of 21-10 (Norristown), 7-6 (Glen Mills), and this week was tied @ 14 going into half.  Norristown failed to score in the second half, Glen Mills only scored 6 points, and Coatesville was shut out in the second half.

This week, Coatesville was able to use its slight spped advantage early on to hit a few quick strikes.  Both teams traded possessions (Stocker interception, Cougar punt) to start the game, and an illegal block penalty pushed the Red Raiders back to their own 15 yard line.  It took Coatesville one play to score on a staple of the spread offense- the jet sweep, by Dae-Hon Cheung, as he streaked 85 yards untouched for a touchdown.  The Cougars tied the game on their opening drive of the 2nd quarter, after Trey Lauletta scampered 30 yards after a fake to Drew Harris.  Coatesville took a (albeit brief) 14-7 lead when junior quarterback Manny Stocker hit his classmate Kyle Kerrick on a 40 yard touchdown pass.  Not to be outdone by their rivals, Downingtown East standout Drew Harris scored from 7 yards out to tie the game at 14-14, heading into halftime.

From there, the Cougars clamped down on defense, only allowing the Red Raiders to 4 first downs for the game.  Stocker was ineffective all second half, Cheung had minus 1 yard rushing, Stocker was held to 20, and the team was held to roughly 35 yards in the second half.  The lone score came on a gutsy call late in the third quarter, when Trey Lauletta hit a wide open Wade Mastrog on 4th down and 2 from the Coatesville 3 yard line.

Many Cougar players expressed relief with the win tonight.  Drew Harris stated that it "felt good to get this win".  On the big opening kickoff, and the defense's second half shutout- Brandon Robles stated "We had a bad first half, the defense stepped it up.  On the kickoff, we put Jeff Kiely on the return team a couple days ago, I always feel I can take a kick to the house."

None were more relieved then Mike Matta was.  "Coatesville is a heck of a team, there are a lot of decent players over there.  #15 (Manny Stocker) kept a lot of plays alive.  We played real well on defense in the 2nd half.  Our OLB was hurt, so we stuck 166 pounds of Brandon Robles up there.  Robles is a great leader, he was talking to the team when I walked into the locker room at halftime."

Coatesville boss Matt Ortega took some positives out of the loss, "We lost Wilson on offense, which adjusted our game plan.  We wanted to use our speed and attack the edges with sweeps and off tackle plays.  They clawed all game, and it is a long season."  I may not like saying this being a Downingtown grad (I would have gone to East had the split occured back when I was going through there), but Coatesville may be the team to beat in 2011.
