Downingtown East thwarts upset bid from rival Coatesville

Posted Saturday, September 25, 2010 by staff writer Peter DiGiovanni, Daily Local News

CALN — The Downingtown East football team limped into its locker room Friday night at Coatesville's Multi-Purpose Stadium tied at halftime with the underdog Red Raiders and wondering if its season of so much promise may be going up in smoke.

Coatesville had played the Cougars to a 14-14 draw and had broken off two big plays on the Cougars defense and had put some doubt into the minds of those on hand.

The Cougars were looking for a leader to spark them back into their winning ways. Enter Brandon Robles.

Robles took the second-half kickoff and darted 63 yards to the Coatesville 38-yard line to set up a seven-play Cougar scoring drive that would prove to be the difference in a hard fought 21-14 Downingtown East victory.

"I cannot take the credit for the return," Robles said. "I got great blocking from the guys and Jeff Kiely threw a great block to spring me. He has only been on special teams for two days and he made a great block. I wanted to give us a lift with a big return but I want to do that every time I go back there."

Quarterback Trey Lauletta finished the scoring drive with a three yard touchdown pass to Wade Mastrog on a fourth and two play at the three yard line. The Cougars were led down the field on the tough

running of Drew Harris, who rushed the ball 39 times for 160 yards on the hot, steamy night.

"It was crazy running like that in the heat but it felt good," Harris said. "We needed to control the ball and we did that. We struggled offensively tonight and we have a lot of hard work to do at practice. We will be back."

Downingtown East (1-0 Ches-Mont, 3-1 overall) was on its heels as Dae-Hon Cheung rambled 85 yards to give Coatesville (0-1, 2-2) a early 7-0 lead. Then, the Cougars got stung on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Manny Stocker to the impressive Kyle Kerrick. The teams went into the locker rooms tied at 14, but it appeared Coatesville was coming on.

Think again. The tough Cougar defense, led by Kenny Ambrogi and Robles, held the Red Raiders to absolutely nothing in the second half. Coatesville could only muster 46 yards of total offense in the second half with the Cougars resembling the old Steel Curtain defense of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"Everybody asked me if I yelled at halftime," Downingtown East head coach Mike Matta said. "I didn't have to. Brandon Robles already let everybody know what they had to do. He was always a good, tough player but now he has added leader to his game. He played linebacker for us tonight at 165 pounds and did a great job.

"On his kickoff return, a few days ago my special teams coach put a few things in and Kiely made a great block. We need to work on some things nad get better but I was very happy withe the defense in the second half. They won the game for us."

Coatesville head coach Matt Ortega was happy with the Red Raiders effort but sorry the upset bid fell short.

"The effort was great," Ortega said. "But when we lost Dom Wilson to injury in the first half that hurt us. We thought we could get the edge on them with our speed, but when Dom went out it hurt us. But, give them credit. They did play tough defense. We have now lost two games by 14 points to two teams ranked very high, Ridley and these guys. So, I told the kids we have plenty of time left to make some noise."
